UNE Human Rights Conference
November 14 – 17, 2019

Dear members,

The UNE Human Rights Conference is quickly approaching. We invite you to submit your application to join us in Gatineau, QC from November 14 – 17, 2019 for an exciting chance to meet with fellow Human Rights activists and discuss the many issues facing our union.

The Conference, held every three years, will feature guest speakers, educational sessions and networking opportunities for those in attendance.

In addition, elections will be held for the following:

  • National Equity Representative for Aboriginal Peoples
  • National Equity Representative for Persons with Disabilities
  • National Equity Representative for Racially Visible People
  • National Equity Representative for LGBTQ2+
  • National Equity Representative for Women
  • Four (4) Equity Group Delegates to the 2020 Triennial Convention from each group

Members must self-identify during the application process and will not be able to change or modify their equity group status at the Conference.

During online registration, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire. Your answers will be used in the Conference selection process. Here are the questions so that you can prepare and then copy/paste your answers during registration.

Describe your experiences as a human rights activist within the union, your community and/or share your personal story (use the following guidelines as a basis for your description):

  1. How will your participation impact your Local, your Union and your community?
  2. Have you had any formal training or exposure to Human Rights issues?
  3. Describe community organization, Local or any other experience you feel is pertinent (e.g. community activism in Human Rights or social justice, Union positions held, etc.)
  4. Why are Human Rights important to you?

We ask that you register by Friday, October 4th, 2019.

Ontario Regional Seminar

The Ontario Regional Team invites you to participate in their Regional Seminar scheduled to take place at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel, Ontario on October 25-27, 2019.

This event will offer presentations and workshop training that will give you the knowledge and confidence to help your members. It’s also a great place to meet active members just like you and forge long-lasting friendships.

The UNE will fund the following delegates per Local:

  • A Local President or designate should be one of the delegates;
  • A member who has not previously attended a seminar should be given priority;
  • Locals will elect a youth delegate to attend the Regional Seminar (age 35 or younger as of December 31, 2020).

Locals are required to encourage the participation of equity members. Locals may send additional members at their own expense.

You must register by Friday, September 27, 2019. Unfortunately, we will not consider late registrations.

Delegates to the Regional Seminar should arrive for registration at 7:00p.m. Friday evening, October 25, 2019. Statement by the UNE National President on the Government Update on Phoenix Pay System Replacement

Yesterday we learned from Treasury Board President Joyce Murray that the path to the replacement of the Phoenix Pay System is underway.

Three vendors have been selected as part of the procurement process, following consultations with different stakeholders, including unions, primarily PIPSC (Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada). A pilot project phase for the new pay and HR pay system called Next Gen should be put in place by the end of the year allowing public servants to test the three selected pay systems and provide valuable feedback to the government.

Although PIPSC National President Debi Daviau placed the emphasis on her membership’s expertise and their ability to codify and build computer systems, we hope that future joint announcements will involve ALL bargaining agents that have members under federal jurisdiction.

We still don’t know when Next Gen will be fully implemented, the government refusing to give a definitive launch date. It is a shame because it would give hope to thousands of UNE members who have been impacted by the Phoenix fiasco over the past 3 years.

Along with PSAC, we are still demanding a fair compensation for damage done to our members.

We are in the middle of National Public Service Week (NPSW). It is also an election year and many UNE members are in bargaining. Our members deserve to be FULLY paid and ON TIME. No more mistakes, no more excuses, no more delays. We demand a pay and HR system that will work from Coast to Coast to Coast and we demand it now. Let’s Get It Done!

Local Presidents’ Conference – That’s a Wrap

The UNE would like to thank all 180 members who came out for this years’ UNE Local Presidents’ Conference.

Over the weekend, participants heard from an impressive lineup of guest speakers, engaged in panel discussions and gathered together in employer and regional caucuses.

On Friday, Maple Creek Saskatchewan’s Omar Murray gave a powerful review of the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919. CLC’s Larry Rousseau then fired the group up even more before they headed out in bus loads to the Prime Minister’s Office with messages of support for our bargaining teams, dismay at the Phoenix debacle and solidarity with Indigenous Canadians cheering on Bill C-262.

Upon return from the rally, the crowd heard from NDP Member of Parliament, Ms. Ruth Ellen Brosseau who spoke of her rise in politics and how she challenges the current Liberal government. Then it was off to workshops within employer groups before ending a busy first full day.

Saturday kicked off with regional caucuses and then a presentation by Mr. Alexandre St-Jean from the Office of the Ombudsman, Ethics and Conflict Resolution at Treasury Board. A panel discussion on Duty to Accommodate with UNE National Labour Relations Officers then capped off the morning.

In the afternoon, participants worked in smaller groups to learn about challenges, experiences and tools available to them as Local Presidents.

Sunday morning, attendees heard from the five National Equity Representatives for Human Rights on their personal experiences and the importance of inclusion at the local, regional and national levels.

UNE National President Kevin King closed out the conference.

The component now turns its event focus to a series of Regional Seminars and the upcoming Women’s Conference scheduled for September 10-12, 2019.

2019 Local Presidents’ Conference

Members of the UNE Family,

The UNE 2019 Local Presidents’ Conference is just a few short months away! Local Presidents are invited to join us in Gatineau, QC, from March 21 – 24 for an exciting chance to gather with other Union activists and discuss current issues facing our Union.

We ask that UNE Local Presidents register online by Friday, February 8, 2019.

Your Local’s participation is very important. If you are unable to attend, we encourage you to designate another member of your Local Executive to attend the Conference.
