{"id":8653,"date":"2020-11-20T10:32:16","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T15:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.une-sen.org\/press\/?p=8653"},"modified":"2020-11-20T10:32:18","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T15:32:18","slug":"trans-day-of-remembrance-covid-19-has-increased-barriers-faced-by-trans-and-non-binary-people-especially-if-racialized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/?p=8653","title":{"rendered":"Trans Day of Remembrance: COVID-19 has increased barriers faced by trans and non-binary people, especially if racialized"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.une-sen.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/transdayofremembrance-v2_0.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/transdayofremembrance-v2_0.png 960w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/transdayofremembrance-v2_0-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/transdayofremembrance-v2_0-768x320.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>November 20, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we mourn trans, two-spirit, non-binary and gender non-conforming people who have lost their lives to transphobia.&nbsp;November 20th&nbsp;is Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR)&nbsp;which&nbsp;began in 1999 by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a trans woman who was murdered in 1998.&nbsp;On this day, PSAC&nbsp;mourns&nbsp;the loss of those&nbsp;who&nbsp;were loving partners, parents, family members, friends and community members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there have been many&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/3532824\/senate-passes-bill-c-16-which-defends-transgender-rights\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent gains in trans inclusion in Canada<\/a><\/strong>, trans people, especially racialized trans feminine people, continue to be disproportionality affected by&nbsp;gender-based&nbsp;violence.&nbsp;COVID-19 has only exacerbated the discrimination and inequities these individuals face.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>COVID-19&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;Its&nbsp;Impacts on Trans&nbsp;People&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic has been a challenging time for everyone, but&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/psacunion.ca\/examining-impacts-covid-19-lgbtq2-community\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">individuals in&nbsp;trans and non-binary communities have&nbsp;faced&nbsp;additional barriers&nbsp;during the spread of COVID-19<\/a><\/strong>. Accessing hormones and gender-affirming surgeries&nbsp;has been especially difficult.&nbsp;Since trans and non-binary&nbsp;people&nbsp;are more likely to work precarious jobs, they have also experienced&nbsp;a&nbsp;loss of income&nbsp;and job security.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/transpulsecanada.ca\/results\/report-1\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A survey conducted prior to COVID-19<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;indicated that 12% of respondents avoided going to the emergency room because they were trans or non-binary.&nbsp;Discrimination and these&nbsp;pre-existing health barriers&nbsp;have been heightened due to COVID-19.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trans and non-binary people have also faced an increase in the impacts of&nbsp;domestic&nbsp;violence in their homes in times of isolation. Furthermore, social distancing measures have had a detrimental impact on the mental health of many.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Racialized Trans &amp; Non-Binary People&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports show that racialized trans and non-binary people in Canada\u00a0experience\u00a0additional\u00a0challenges and\u00a0discrimination.\u00a0In 2019,\u00a0Trans Pulse Canada\u00a0conducted a survey with 2873 trans and non-binary people\u00a0across the country. Racialized respondents reported\u00a0higher\u00a0levels of discrimination, violence and assault\u00a0than their non-racialized counterparts. 73% of respondents expressed fear towards police and expected unfair treatment by the legal system. Nearly 3\u00a0in\u00a04 respondents reported being verbally harassed within the last 5 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Black trans people report feeling disproportionately targeted and harassed by police.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2020\/11\/04\/2-city-councilors-the-519-call-for-answers-after-black-trans-woman-dies-in-police-custody\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>recent death of Coco, a 30-year-old Black trans woman living in Toronto<\/strong><\/a>, while she was in the custody of the Toronto Police Services, is another stark reminder of the dangers racialized trans women face regularly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>What can you do commemorate TDOR?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can participate in TDOR by attending and\/or organizing a vigil on November 20th&nbsp;to&nbsp;honor&nbsp; trans&nbsp;and gender non-conforming people whose lives were lost due to transphobia.&nbsp;We encourage you to&nbsp;participate in a digital&nbsp;vigil&nbsp;taking place online.&nbsp;If you are attending a vigil in person, we remind all members&nbsp;to take appropriate COVID-19 safety precautions (wear a mask,&nbsp;physical&nbsp;distancing, wash hands, etc.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also encourage your Member of Parliament to&nbsp;pass the Conversion Therapy Bill (Bill C-6) once and for all. Conversion therapy is the damaging practice of denying LGBTQ2+&nbsp;people their&nbsp;dignity and trying to coerce&nbsp;individuals&nbsp;to change their identity.
