{"id":8509,"date":"2020-10-01T08:03:31","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T13:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.une-sen.org\/press\/?p=8509"},"modified":"2020-10-01T08:03:33","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T13:03:33","slug":"une-supports-the-moderate-livelihood-fishery-of-the-lnu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/?p=8509","title":{"rendered":"UNE Supports the moderate livelihood fishery of the L\u2019nu"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"725\" height=\"482\" src=\"http:\/\/www.une-sen.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/GettyImages-825964526-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/GettyImages-825964526-1.jpg 725w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/GettyImages-825964526-1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 725px) 100vw, 725px\" \/><figcaption>Indian beadwork<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 1725 and 1761, the L\u2019nu, also known as the Mi\u2019kmaq, signed treaties of peace and friendship with representatives of the British crown.&nbsp; These treaties did not cede lands and included the right to harvest natural resources to support a moderate livelihood.&nbsp; These treaties have not always been upheld by the crown, as evidenced by the arrest of Donald Marshall Jr. in 1993 for catching and selling $787.10 worth of eels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marshall, who had been recognized in 1990 by a royal commission that identified racism as a factor in his wrongful imprisonment for murder, went to the Supreme Court to uphold his fishing rights.&nbsp;The 1999 Marshall decision affirmed Mi\u2019kmaw treaty rights to a moderate livelihood from hunting and fishing.
