With convention fast approaching, we thought this might be a great time to remind you of some of the awards we have to recognize the outstanding contributions of our members.<\/p>\n

First off, there\u2019s the lifetime membership award<\/a>; it\u2019s the highest honour that we can bestow to a member. It\u2019s an award that\u2019s reserved for those who have made significant contributions to our union. It\u2019s also traditionally awarded to members who would otherwise lose their membership when they retire or leave their jobs.<\/p>\n

During our last convention, the award was given to Bernard Labont\u00e9, who occupied many roles in our union for over 20 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has always been very actively involved with the membership and has always been very available,\u201d
\nwrote then-regional vice-president Jean-Pierre Naud. \u201cBernard has always been a leader in all mandates entrusted to him and positions held within our union.\u201d<\/p>\n

The award was also bestowed to Joyce Hendy, who had made significant contributions in the 90s and beyond. It\u2019s thanks to Hendy\u2019s hard work that the national vice-president for human rights is now part of the national executive.<\/p>\n

Hendy was also recognized for her role on the Joint Learning Program steering committee and her significant work in reaching out to youth and new members.<\/p>\n

Our union also has an honorary membership award<\/a>; this one is awarded to individuals who wouldn\u2019t otherwise be eligible for membership in our union. This can include members outside of the organization or those who have retired.<\/p>\n

The last honorary membership was awarded in 2003; we\u2019re sure it\u2019s not because there isn\u2019t anyone around deserving of this high honour. Can you think of anyone?<\/p>\n
