When I was asked to submit an article for International Women’s Day, I was excited at the prospect. Immediately, my mind started perusing numerous options. I used the opportunity to express myself in the vein I feel most comfortable: creatively.<\/p>\n

I felt like a poem would best capture my passion over the day and the importance of having this day acknowledged and celebrated.<\/p>\n

\nWE
\nSHE<\/p>\n

Reflecting me
\nThe women of History,\u00a0Past and Present<\/p>\n

The intertwined arms of the worldwide sisterhood
\nNurturing and Protecting each nation
\nSustaining all creeds and cultures<\/p>\n

Women slain, laying bare-breasted
\nSuckling generations
\nAlong grassy plains and concrete jungles<\/p>\n

DIS-missed by governments’ regulations
\nBLIND-sided by society’s apathy
\nWAY-layed by war and disillusionment<\/p>\n

Voices raised in earnest
\nClamouring for the essentials of their irreverent sex
\nPEACE, SAFETY, SECURITY, INDEPENDENCE AND KNOWLEDGE<\/p>\n

Straining against society’s reins
\nBoundaries blurred, distorted by others perceptions of gender
\nSurvival seeping out of sisters pores, as veins bulge in anguish<\/p>\n

And SHE, with spirit abound
\nInfused with the century old fights
\nRises to pristine heights
\nReady to lay claim to HER rights<\/p>\n

HER stories written and retold, awaken movements
\nWith limbs, once immobile
\nNow tactile and fluid<\/p>\n

She laughs
\nTears flow
\nLips frown
\nAnd here SHE stands, Firmly Rooted<\/p>\n

I

\nSHE<\/p>\n
