{"id":13051,"date":"2026-04-28T09:18:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T14:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/?p=13051"},"modified":"2026-04-29T14:13:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T19:13:09","slug":"day-of-mourning-2026-psychological-health-and-safety-matters-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/?p=13051","title":{"rendered":"Day of Mourning 2026: Psychological health and safety matters at work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Day-of-Mourning-2026-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13058\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Day-of-Mourning-2026-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Day-of-Mourning-2026-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Day-of-Mourning-2026-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Day-of-Mourning-2026-1-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Day-of-Mourning-2026-1.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 28, workers across Canada mark the National Day of Mourning.&nbsp;We remember those who have been injured, made ill,&nbsp;or killed because of their&nbsp;work, and we recommit to fighting&nbsp;for the living.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, we are highlighting&nbsp;an important truth: psychological&nbsp;health and safety&nbsp;is&nbsp;a core part of&nbsp;occupational health and safety.&nbsp;Work-related stress, burnout, harassment,&nbsp;violence,&nbsp;and exposure to trauma&nbsp;are&nbsp;still&nbsp;too often&nbsp;treated as just part of the job.&nbsp;These&nbsp;are real workplace hazards that can cause serious psychological harm, and they must be prevented like any other occupational health and safety risk.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&nbsp;also&nbsp;know that physical injuries can lead to psychological harm.&nbsp;Living&nbsp;with pain,&nbsp;trauma,&nbsp;long recoveries, or&nbsp;dealing with&nbsp;drawn-out&nbsp;workers\u2019 compensation cases&nbsp;can take a significant toll on mental health, leading to&nbsp;stress, anxiety, or depression.&nbsp;That\u2019s&nbsp;why&nbsp;physical and psychological health&nbsp;must&nbsp;be&nbsp;addressed&nbsp;together.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSAC and UNE join the Canadian&nbsp;Labour&nbsp;Congress&nbsp;in&nbsp;urging&nbsp;all levels of government to treat psychological health with the same seriousness as physical health under occupational health and safety and workers&#8217;
