{"id":12872,"date":"2025-11-05T14:03:34","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T19:03:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/?p=12872"},"modified":"2025-11-06T10:08:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T15:08:21","slug":"federal-budget-government-plans-deep-public-service-cuts-and-weakens-workers-bargaining-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/?p=12872","title":{"rendered":"Federal Budget: Government plans deep public service cuts and weakens workers\u2019 bargaining rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Budget2025-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12874\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Budget2025-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Budget2025-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Budget2025-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Budget2025-1-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.unesen.ca\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Budget2025-1.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ottawa, November&nbsp;5, 2025 \u2014&nbsp;The Public Service Alliance of Canada&nbsp;is&nbsp;deeply concerned&nbsp;about&nbsp;the federal government\u2019s plan&nbsp;to&nbsp;slash&nbsp;critical&nbsp;public services,&nbsp;cut&nbsp;more than&nbsp;40,000&nbsp;federal public service workers, and&nbsp;undermine&nbsp;the collective bargaining rights of hundreds of thousands of workers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the needs of a growing and aging population, the government\u2019s&nbsp;Budget 2025 will&nbsp;eliminate&nbsp;vital programs&nbsp;and services&nbsp;over the next three years&nbsp;while replacing workers with artificial intelligence&nbsp;through its Comprehensive Expenditure Review&nbsp;(CER).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These&nbsp;deep public service&nbsp;cuts&nbsp;will hurt workers, families and communities across Canada,&#8221; said&nbsp;PSAC National President Sharon DeSousa.&nbsp;&#8220;People&nbsp;can expect&nbsp;longer wait times for passports,&nbsp;EI and&nbsp;child care&nbsp;benefits,&nbsp;more unanswered calls at Canada Revenue Agency,&nbsp;reduced public health and food safety efforts,&nbsp;and a government that isn\u2019t there for ordinary people when they need it most.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of investing in frontline services and the workers who keep Canada running, the government is doubling down on&nbsp;job cuts and AI chatbots that will weaken Canada\u2019s social safety net.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSAC will&nbsp;do everything in its power to&nbsp;protect public services and the people who provide them by enforcing&nbsp;the provisions of our collective agreements and the rights enshrined in&nbsp;labour&nbsp;law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrime Minister&nbsp;Carney talks a lot about how&nbsp;Canada will&nbsp;have to make sacrifices, but who&nbsp;is&nbsp;really&nbsp;making sacrifices in this budget?\u201d&nbsp;asked&nbsp;DeSousa. \u201cIt\u2019s not the mega corporations, the wealthy bankers or the CEOs&nbsp;\u2013 once again&nbsp;it\u2019s working people in this country&nbsp;who will shoulder the&nbsp;burden.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Changes to collective bargaining&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are&nbsp;also&nbsp;extremely concerned about the government\u2019s decision to unilaterally change the labour laws that govern federal public service workers,&nbsp;and will be reviewing&nbsp;the legislation&nbsp;closely.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These changes are yet another direct attack by this government on workers\u2019&nbsp;constitutionally protected&nbsp;collective bargaining rights,\u201d said DeSousa.&nbsp;\u201cLet me be clear: workers fought hard to secure these&nbsp;rights, and&nbsp;will fight tooth-and-nail to protect them.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Equitable retirement for frontline workers&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We welcome the commitment in the budget to provide public safety workers with&nbsp;equitable&nbsp;retirement benefits, allowing them to retire with dignity after 25 years of service, without penalty.
